Community

The Glendale Elementary School District encompasses 16 square miles in the heart of the city of Glendale, a large suburban community located immediately northwest of Phoenix. Glendale was a small agricultural community which has now grown to a population of over 180,000 people. This rapid growth is largely due to the favorable climate, employment opportunities, numerous amenities, a strong sense of community and pleasant quality of life.

Although primarily a residential area, there are a few large corporations within the district's boundaries, including several large shopping centers and major utility companies. The economy in Maricopa County is based on high technology manufacturing, and commercial activities (including construction and trade), tourism, government and agriculture.

Residents of the State of Arizona are permitted to make contributions to approved school activities. These contributions reduce your Arizona State income tax liability by the amount you contribute. Please refer to the Arizona State Department of Revenue web site or call any of the numbers listed below for additional information. It is always a good idea to check with your tax professional prior to making any contribution that will affect your tax liability. The limited information outlined below is from the Arizona Department of Revenue web site.

What is the maximum dollar amount of the credit? The credit is equal to the amount contributed or the amount of fees paid. However, for single taxpayers or heads of household, the credit cannot exceed $200. For married taxpayers that file a joint return, the credit cannot exceed $400 for tax year 2007 and subsequent years. If married taxpayers file separate returns, each spouse may claim 1/2 of the credit that would have been allowed on a joint return.

Who may claim these tax credits? These credits are available only to individuals.

Must a taxpayer have a child in school in order to claim one or both of these credits? No.

What do I have to do to qualify for this credit? To qualify for the credit you must make cash contributions (single-payment personal check) or pay fees to a public school for support of extra curricular activities or for character education programs.

Will I qualify for the credit if I pay fees for my own child to participate in an extra curricular activity or character education program? Yes, fees that you pay for your own child to participate in an extra curricular activity or character education program qualify for the credit.
