Bicentennial North School offers a
comprehensive special education program.
Services include a cross-categorical resource
classroom and supportive services in the regular
classrooms known as our inclusion classrooms,
80% of our special education students are in
inclusion classrooms. 20% are serviced in
resource class. As much as possible, special
needs students are educated at their home school
within the regular or special classroom setting.
The cross-categorical resource classroom is
considered a "pullout" program for students
needing more intensive services and a small
group setting. Students placed in the resource
classroom are usually more distractible,
disruptive, and/or their skills are far below
the norm. Students spend anywhere from 21-60% of
their school day receiving direct special
education services. A teaching assistant is
utilized in the resource classroom. The
remainder of the day is spent in their regular
education classroom and special area class. The
special education teacher and the classroom
teacher collaborate on specialized instruction,
methods, material, modifications and/or
interventions to use in the regular classroom
with the special needs student. The special
education teacher spends half of the school day
in each inclusion class.
Our inclusion classrooms are for students who
can benefit from placement in the regular
classroom. There are one or two "inclusion"
classrooms at each grade level. These classrooms
are staffed with a regular education teacher, a
special education teacher, and a teaching
assistant. The special education teacher works
with only two regular education teachers. When
the special education teacher is not in the
classroom, the teaching assistant is there to
work with the regular education teacher and
students. The special education teacher and the
regular education teacher team teach.
Together, they develop specialized instruction, methods, material,
modifications, and/or interventions to be utilized with the special
needs students.
In 2000-2001 & 2001-2002 school years we have added three
functional skills programs which are self contained special education
programs. Students in these rooms come from all over the district.
The curriculum in this program focuses on life skills which will
assist these students in living independently as adults
The administration, faculty, and staff at
Bicentennial North School are committed to our
vision "Bicentennial North - Education for
Life". This is evident in the way we all work
together to prepare our students for the
future.
