Tips For First Grade Parents

The educational focus in first grade is on reading. The most important thing you can do to help your children in this endeavor is to read with them at home. This should include them reading to you and you reading to them. When you read, make sure you ask questions. Ask their opinion on the story, have them retell the story or compare it to other books you have read. Questioning helps children think about and process what they have read.

There are many reading skills that can easily be practiced at home. Some examples are:

  • Letter/sound recognition(use flashcards)
  • Create lists of word families (can, man, pan, than)
  • Practice reading sight words (lists can be obtained from teachers)
  • Write a sentence, cut out each word, have the child reassemble and read the sentence.
  • Purchase, or make, a concentration game where word cards are matched to the corresponding picture cards.
  • Any games, such as sight word Bingo, are fun ways for children to learn.
  • Read the newspaper together. Have you child point out words he/she knows.

These are just a few of the skills you can practice at home. The most important thing is to make reading seem fun. Reading together also helps build a bond between parent and child. Reading can become a special time for you and your child to share and nurture a love of good literature and the importance of reading.
